Purpose over profit: How the IT giant Tata Consultancy Services wins by prioritizing social impact

As many companies today scramble to adopt stronger environmental and social governance, they’re playing catchup to organizations like India’s Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) – one of the world’s largest IT service providers – which has prioritized “purpose over profit” since its founding in the 1960s.

We spoke to Girish Ramachandran, president for Asia Pacific at TCS, to see how the company is translating its longstanding philanthropic philosophies into the 21st-century context.

In our conversation, we discussed TCS’s sustainability initiatives and its use of cutting-edge technology to implement volunteering and social impact programs that enrich the lives of its employees and their communities.

Ramachandran also gave an optimistic perspective on how the pandemic has affected our progress towards the SDGs. “This crisis is an opportunity to reboot,” he said, “with sustainability at the center of everything.”
